Congress Approves Bill to Make Public Jeffrey Epstein Files

The upper chamber of Congress on this Tuesday gave swift approval to a measure that will mandate the disclosure of investigative files concerning the deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, following a overwhelming vote in the US House of Representatives and a shift by the president and his GOP allies. The White House relented after months of trying to forestall the bipartisan effort involving a scandal that has dogged the president since his comeback to the White House.

Expedited Passage in Congress

Senators proceeded by general agreement, which needs acceptance from each senator but avoids a recorded vote, speeding up the process. Just before, the House passed by a huge margin the bill on a near-unanimous vote.

“The American people have waited long enough. The survivors have waited patiently,” the Senate Democratic leader declared in a address to the chamber on Tuesday, before requesting the chamber to approve it without opposition. “Reveal the truth. Ensure full disclosure.”

Future Action

This legislation next will be sent to Trump for his endorsement. He signaled on the previous day that he would approve the bill.

Even though the president has for months dismissed the uproar over the official management of the scandal as a “false narrative”, he expressed his backing for the House bill over the past few days, and announced he would approve it if it comes to him.

Response

The Democratic party, along with those affected and their advocates who were seated in a public section, cheered after the bill was enacted. Lone dissent came from a Louisiana Republican, who said he worried the measure would disclose specific data of individuals involved, potential suspects and others implicated in the investigation.
